5th Annual United Way of the Greater Triangle MLK Day of Service
For the fifth year, United Way of the Greater Triangle (UWGT) will present the Triangle Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 18, 2010. Durham, Orange and Wake counties will host a total of 30 community-service projects to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King by making the holiday “A Day On, not a Day Off,” across the Triangle.
Durham County Signature Project: Fifty volunteers will help with stuffing grocery bags and delivering them to Triangle area homes for families-in-need.
Orange County Signature Project: over 200 volunteers will create Valentine’s Day care packages for U.S. troops in Iraq. People will also make blankets and scarves for clients of local United Way of the Greater Triangle partner agencies.
Wake County Signature Project: Approximately 60 volunteers will paint the Raleigh Boys Club gym and do other various projects around the club.

Service Opportunity Prepares Landscape for Soon-To-Be formerly Homeless Tenants
Event: MLK Day CREEK CLEANUP at Williams Square
This spring Williams Square Apartments will open its doors to twenty-four formerly homeless people.
As final stages of construction are underway, attention has been turned toward the beautiful, but
never attended land that borders the buildings. though overgrown, it is not hard to find that an
incredible urban creek runs through the property. this creek eventually makes its way to the Eno
River.
On Monday, January 18, please join the friends of Housing for new Hope to help pick up trash
and recyclable items in preparation for the eventual creation of pathways and meditation areas for
formerly homeless tenants and guests.

Wake Tech Service Project Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
RALEIGH, N.C. – a group of volunteers from Wake Technical Community College will roll up their sleeves and help a local child care center in a service project honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Monday, January 18, college staff, faculty and students will spend the day upgrading the playground at the QEI Child Development Center of Raleigh. QEI, a church-run center in Southeast Raleigh, is housed in an aging facility.
Wake Tech volunteers will cover two-hour shifts from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at the Center, repairing the fence surrounding the playground and improving the sandbox area; installing a new basketball goal; and adding plant boxes, a garden, and an outdoor stage. Students in Wake Tech’s Early Childhood Education program will continue assisting the Center throughout the semester as a service learning project. Materials for the upgrade were donated or provided at low cost by area
businesses.

AmeriCorps Members to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through Service
RALEIGH – AmeriCorps members across North Carolina will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by volunteering their time to help others. Members will help distribute food, organize a new homeless shelter, prepare goodie bags for troops and participate in a variety of community events. Gov. Bev Perdue signed a proclamation in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The following are projects AmeriCorps members will participate in for the King Day of Service. All events are on Monday, Jan. 18, unless otherwise noted:
• Capital Area Workforce Development Board, Access JobLink: Members will be working with Antioch Builds Community of First United Antioch Baptist Church to rehabilitate an abandoned house the church has recently purchased. The house will be used as a half-way house for ex-offenders re-engaging with the community. Members and volunteers will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 214 Hyde Park Avenue in Durham to perform general repair work, landscaping, painting, wallpapering and carpeting. for more information, call Ray Riordan at 919-856-5992 or 919-368-2959.
• University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education, N.C. Literacy Corps: Members along with United Way of the Greater Triangle and Christ United Methodist Church of Chapel Hill have partnered to sponsor the Orange County signature project. from 11a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will make blankets, scarves and Valentine goodie bags for troops. this activity will take place at 800 Market St. in Chapel Hill. for more information, call Dalia Santos at 919-463-5006.
• Child Care Services Association, T.E.a.C.H. Early Childhood Corps: Members and volunteers will be serving at Antioch Baptist’s community center in downtown Durham helping to restore the center by doing repair work, landscaping, painting and re-carpeting from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The community center provides services to ex-offenders including job training through Durham’s Joblink Career Center and reintegration services. MLK Commission Leadds Bell-Ringing Tribute To Dr. King
RALEIGH – Members of the N.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will lead a bell-ringing tribute following a ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, on the Bicentennial Plaza near the N.C. Museum of History. The event will be led by Dr. Dumas Harshaw, pastor of First Baptist Church, 101 S. Wilmington St., in Raleigh and chairman of the MLK Commission.
Dr. George Jackson, a Commissioner from East Spencer, will lead the ceremony in an invocation, followed by remarks from Dr. Harshaw. Music will be provided by Commissioner Jacquie Jeffers of Wilson, and a proclamation from Gov. Bev Perdue declaring Monday as “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day” throughout North Carolina will be read just prior to the bell-ringing tribute.
Ringing of a replica Liberty Bell will commence at 10:30 a.m. The Commission invites citizens and organizations to participate by ringing bells at 10:30 a.m. in their individual communities, creating a simultaneous bell-ringing tribute throughout the state in memory of the civil rights leader.
The Commission, which promotes among the people of North Carolina an awareness and appreciation of the life and work of Dr. King, was established by the General Assembly in 1993 and is part of the N.C. Durham Academy to pack 20,000 meals on MLK Day
The Durham Academy community will pack 20,000 meals on January 18 to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s a day off from school, but a “day on” for service to others. The meal-packing blitz will take place from 1-3 p.m. at Durham Academy’s Lower School campus, 3501 Ridge Road, Durham.
Faculty, parents and students from preschool through high school will gather around funnel stations to package dehydrated, fortified rice-soy meals containing over 20 vitamins and minerals especially formulated for the undernourished. The meals will be vacuum-sealed in bags three millimeters thick, allowing them to be stored in warehouses for up to five years.
Durham Academy’s January 18 meal packing event will benefit stop Hunger now, a Raleigh-based international hunger relief organization that distributes food and other life-saving aid around the world. The highly nutritious meals are used in crisis situations and feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world.
