Mia Cleary, 17, pursues opportunities for academic and personalgrowth that will help her stand out in a crowd.
Cleary, the daughter of Bill and June Cleary, of Flossmoor, andsenior at Marian Catholic High School, is an honor student with a4.4 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. she is taking AdvancedPlacement English, statistics, biology and micro/macro economicsalong with honors Spanish IV. Cleary is a member of National HonorSociety, Mu Alpha Theta math honor society and Spanish NationalHonor Society. She’s earned an academic letter for having twoconsecutive semesters with a 4.0 or better and an academic awardfor continuing academic excellence. Cleary also is an IllinoisState Scholar and Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction.
Serving on the executive board as first vice president forStudent Council has involved Cleary in a number of activities, mostrecently a food drive and blood drive. the student organization iscurrently planning a carnival for grade school children.
Cleary is active in recruitment corps and sports. she is afour-year varsity soccer player who received the teams 110 PercentAward both freshman and junior years. last season she was named tothe All-Conference, All-Area and All-Sectional teams.
This past summer, Cleary joined students on a weeklongAppalachian service trip.
She worked on a house, built two porches and painted a shed.
“It was a lot of hard work, but it was a lot of fun, too,” shesaid. “I got a lot of perspective and it was very humbling.”
Cleary also participated in the three-day senior Kairos retreatin August.
In previous years, Cleary was active in Math Club and HistoryClub. Her first two years at Marian she played volleyball andbasketball for the school. She’s played club soccer, most recentlywith Darien Dynamo in Darien, Ill., and club basketball withWolverines in Chicago Heights.
Cleary’s applied to nine colleges and plans to major in businessor economics.
In the summer she works as a lifeguard at Flossmoor CountryClub.
