You’ve got to hand it to Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne. the man knows his audience. although nothing has been made into an iPhone application yet, the Bonnaroo Festival lineup and its big reveal on Tuesday, Feb 9, is already getting leaked by some artists.
Coyne told Spinner, who in turn told the world, the band will perform their version of the Dark Side of the Moon album for festival goers. the Lips played DSOTM on New Year’s Eve for their hometown gig in Oklahoma City. when the clock struck midnight it was all about their take on stoner music.
The band performs the first night of Bonnaroo at midnight and as Coyne sums it up, “We do a Flaming Lips set then starting about 2:30 we do this Dark Side of the Moon thing. in that sense, it’s perfect for that. It lets you play a little bit longer. We did it at the New Year’s Eve show just knowing everybody’s gonna be taking acid, staying awake until five in the morning. We might as well just be jamming on some freak-out music,” he said.
“I don’t think it’ll be that much of a stretch to think Friday night at 2:30 in the morning at Bonnaroo would be that much different than being in Oklahoma City on New Year’s Eve. I’m sure people will be having their own party while we play this space rock or whatever. in that sense it’s perfect for that.”
This will be a return visit for the Lips who played Bonnaroo in 2007. Bonnaroo is set for June 10-13 in Manchester, Tenn. Tickets go on sale Feb. 9 at 12pm EST.
