EDISON — on Saturday, the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a socio-spiritual organization based on Hindu principles, will join the global community in commemorating the International Women’s Day while hosting its third annual women’s conference.

An annual celebration held by the United Nations, this day recognizes the achievements of women around the world.

Initiated in 2007, this annual conference gathers women from the South Asian community in new Jersey to celebrate their achievements and discuss avenues for contributing to the community.

this year’s theme of Nurturing Families, Shaping Communities is centered on the phenomenal impact created by the global community of women in the educational and environmental sectors through their pivotal roles in family and society.

the theme draws inspiration from BAPS’ core values of nurturing individuals and creating stronger families. A nurtured individual flourishes in her family and community, and she creates a positive impact on the world around her, Twisha Mehta, organizer of the conference, said.

“We have tried to provide a platform for women to meet one another, learn from one another and work together to foster a positive community,” she said.

Participants will also contribute vegetarian non-perishable items to the Community Food Bank of new Jersey in an effort to reduce hunger and poverty in the local communities.

the various keynote speakers addressing the conference will discuss the significant changes a woman’s contributions to her family and surrounding community can bring about globally.

Toral Patel, a public relations specialist with extensive experience in working with state government, national corporations and non profit/social service organizations, will address the conference on balancing professional passion and family in the modern world.

Christine Newkirk brings international field experience to her discussion on the importance of education. Sweta Todai, a traditionally trained and renowned yoga instructor will discuss the importance of yoga in nurturing women, their families, and their careers. And finally, Neema Roshania, a youth member of the organization, will address the value of spirituality in nurturing families and shaping communities.

the conference will also include video presentations highlighting the activities of BAPS and an opportunity to network at the post conference dinner. the 2010 BAPS Women’s Conference will take place on Saturday March 13, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir located at 2500 Woodbridge Avenue, Edison, NJ 08817.
